The Maltings Fire Poem
The Wreck of the Maltings 1923
On April 27, 1914, a Special Parish Meeting was held to discuss the question of forming a Fire Brigade. The idea was taken up and carried unanimously. A Committee was created to investigate the possibilities, and a Fire Brigade was indeed formed. Equipment was stored in a shed next to the Village Hall and members served on a voluntary basis. Their finest hour came on 10 January 1923 when a fire was reported at The Maltings next to Chandlers in Upper Holt Street.
An admirer (?) at the Atlas Works commemorated their heroic deeds in the following poem. A report of the fire in the local newspaper was perhaps more factual.
