Atlas Gardens

Atlas Bench

Atlas Gardens Sculpture and Benches

When Hunt’s Atlas Works closed  in 1988, the site remained derelict for a while.  George Wimpey Ltd Builders later bought the site for housing development.  The Sculpture and benches were commisioned through the co-operation between Braintree District Council, Earls Colne Parish Council, George Wimpey Ltd and East Anglian Renovations and installed in 2005.  They were designed and made by Paul Margetts.

Most of Paul Margett’s work is commissioned for specific sites and designed in collaboration with the architect and client.

Atlas Gardens

Earls Colne Heritage Museum has successfuly been awarded a £2,500 grant by Braintree District Council under the Community Gardens Scheme.  Work has already begun to upgrade the planting and install four story boards telling the history of the Atlas Works.  The work will be carried out early in 2025 commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the opening of Earls Colne Heritage Museum.  We are being assisted in this task by Braintree District Council, Oliver’s Plants and  Four Colnes Horticultural Society.

Atlas Gardens Cedar Tree

The Earls Colne Twinning Association planted this Blue Atlas Cedar tree in 2006 to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Earls Colne’s Twinning with Nonancourt in France.

A Plaque will be installed in 2025 to mark both the 50th Anniversary of the Twinning Association and the 20th Anniversary of the Earls Colne Heritage Museum.

The Atlas Gardens will become part of a future Earls Colne Village Heritage Trail
